Happy 125th Birthday Vancouver!
I don’t have a moment where I realized I wanted to move to Vancouver, because I was born here. But, I do remember when I realized that I did not want to live anywhere else.
It was about 10 years ago. I had been living in Ottawa during the winter for four months while working as a student for the Canadian government and I missed this city badly. When I came back, I would stare at the mountains like a drooling puppy with its head out the window on a car ride. I couldn’t believe how beautiful this part of the world is and how much I took it for granted because it’s always been home.
So today Vancouver, I celebrate you. I celebrate my childhood memories of Expo 86, being taken to Woodwards for $1.49 days and Santa pictures, Whitespot Pirate Packs, 86ers Games at Swanguard Stadium, everything about Stanley Park, Jericho and Kits Beach, the Kids Only Market at Granville Island, skiing at Cypress and watching E.T. at the Park Cinema.
Growing up here, I watched how some things change and some things stay the same. But, I’ve never been more proud to call this place home.
